Chocolate Chocolate Chocolate
In these uncertain political and economic times, what we need is some unconditional happiness.
What we need is chocolate.
I’ve been meaning to write about chocolate for months now (it being in the title of this blog) but got so distracted by various book-related shenanigans that I’ve been remiss in my duties. I apologize.
So, at long last: Chocolate! Here are my four favorite kinds:
1. In the standard bar category: Chocolove’s Chilies and Cherries Dark Chocolate Bar. Why do I love Chocolove? Let me count the ways: (a) it’s yummy (b) I love dried cherries and the subtle spice from the chilies (c) these bars come with a POEM inside the wrapper. Yes! It’s true! Chocolate + Sonnet = Perfect Joy.
2. In the odd-looking bar category: Lake Champlain Chocolate’s Five Star Bar in Caramel. I eat this bar in slices, like a piece of cake. It’s flavored with honey and vanilla and is just sooo good. My friend Steve Almond has a whole section in his book Candyfreak about Lake Champlain Chocolates—if you haven’t read Candyfreak, you must. Especially on Halloween. With a Five Star Bar in your mouth.
3. In the pretty chocolates category: Marie Belle. There are no better-looking chocolates in the world. I would like to live inside a box of Marie Belle chocolates. If you find yourself in NYC, you have to go to their cafe on Broome Street and drink their hot chocolate. It’s like drinking an entire chocolate bar.
4. Last, but not least, my favorite chocolates in the entire universe: Pierre Marcolini. My friend in France, whom my daughter is named after, introduced these to me ten years ago and I’m forever in her debt. She’s originally from Belgium, and we stayed at her family’s house in Brussels. I loved Brussels—I’d never seen so many chocolate shops in one place in my life. (Plus, how can you not love a place that serves french fry sandwiches?) In Brussels we ate chocolate constantly—spread on our toast for breakfast, and squares of it were served with coffee in every cafe, and then of course the Pierre Marcolinis every night for dessert. There’s a Pierre Marcolini store in NYC, but not one in Austin, which is probably for the best considering how much they cost. But if anyone ever feels like sending a certain exiled-in-Texas writer a box of Pierre Marcolinis, I will marry you. (Especially if your name is Nate Silver.)

Oh yes! Marcolini! Whenever I go back to Brussels, I defenitely go there! The chocolates are delightful and the shop looks like a jewelry shop, it is absolutely exquisite! I haven’t seen the one in NYC, I’m sure it’s pretty nice too. Their pastries are also delicious… and they make ice cream in the summer.
When I moved to Amsterdam last year, I thought I would never find good chocolate here (after Belgium, it is difficult!), BUT, I have found a very nice place called Puccini, and their chocolates are also excellent: http://www.puccinibomboni.com/ So if you come to Amsterdam and look for nice chocolates, this is the right place!
And yes, we need chocolate! It makes people happy! Vive le chocolat!

Thank you for giving me a good chuckle. Not only do I share your love for chocolate and books, you’ve now got me completely hooked on fivethirtyeight.com – especially Nate Silver. I saw Laurel Snyder speak at a SCBWI conference in Pa. and she mentioned your book, Cures for Heartbreak, so I thought I’d check out your book and your blog. I just started the book and I love the voice – can’t wait to dive back in.
Thanks again for the giggle. May you find the charm Austin has to offer (lack of good pizza and Belgian chocolate notwithstanding).

I can also heartily recommend Lake Champlain Chocolates’ Organic Hot Chocolate mix. I can’t explain why it’s so amazing but it’s easily the best instant hot chocolate I’ve ever tried. (I should mention though that you need to mix it with milk – but since it’s as easy to microwave a cup of milk as a cup of water, it’s no more work for me and the results are SO good!)

Wait–what about chocolate for the masses? What can we get that’s good at the cornershop for under $2? Is this one of those elitist blogs? I’ll bet you are a 2-car family.

Ayse, I can’t wait to try Puccini chocolates…they look so good.
Leann, I am so incredibly jealous of your job. What I would give to eat a hot-off-the-enrober Five Star Caramel Bar…
Laura, I hope you like the book! Thanks for visiting!
Jackie, maybe you can send me some of that hot chocolate mix for my birthday? Please please please?

Tom, you’re right. I am a chocolate elitist. In fact I like to eat my fancy schmancy chocolates while rolling in $100 bills and copies of the New Yorker, while simultaneously listening to NPR.
(But I have to point out that you can purchase Chocoloves online for a mere $2.11! And $2 each if you buy 12 at a time. Just mentioning.)

Margo, you probably use a fork and knife to eat your elitist chocolate, don’t you?

You can buy Lake Champlain chocolates at Whole Foods. I don’t know if it’s the complete selection or even the ones you specifically crave, but it’s worth a shot.
Also….before Therapy on S. Congress went away, they used to sell a small selection of the MarieBelle line.
Did you notice that there is a Teuscher chocolates opening on 2nd Street?
If you can recommend some good hot chocolate in town, I would be most grateful!

Oh how I wish I had some Pierre Marcolini chocolate right now…
Margo on 23 Dec 2008 at 4:18 pm #
Sylvia,
I can’t believe they sold MarieBelle here and I missed it! How sad…
And thanks for letting me know about Teuscher’s opening. I can’t wait. (Though I have to say, Pierre Marcolini’s champagne truffles are soooooo much better…if you ever get the chance to go by their shop in NYC, the champagne truffles are unbelievably amazing. Better than champagne itself.)
I will be on the hunt for good hot chocolate here, and will post as soon as I find some!

Chocolove makes me a little nervous, due to all the additives.
These Dolfin Belgian Chocolates are healthy and really good! Kind of expensive, but worth it. Good for “chocolate as a present.”
