My First Rodeo
My friend Bonnie (who’s also from NYC) and I went to our first rodeo recently, and we had the time of our lives. All my cowboy experience heretofore has come solely from multiple readings and weepy viewings of Brokeback Mountain. And from seeing guys dressed as cowboys in gay bars in the West Village, which is just not the same as real live serious wearing-cowboy-hats-not-only-for-Halloween cowboys.
Bonnie and I were agog. Agog and smitten. I’m from Queens! We don’t have people there who can rope a calf in 8 seconds! And ride a bronco! I didn’t even know broncos were real. I thought they were just in movies.
The whole place smelled like cow. In a good way. And I ate my first corn dog–not a lot of corn dogs in Queens either–and it was sweet and salty and delicious.
We also got to meet Miss Rodeo Austin and Miss Rodeo Austin Princess in their sparkly outfits. They were signing photos and Bonnie and I got signed photos of them as gifts for our husbands.
They signed them: “Cowboy up!” And “Rope your dreams!”
I’m going to frame their signed photos. I mean, if you’re having a crappy day and then you look up and see Miss Rodeo Austin telling you to Cowboy Up! And Rope Your Dreams! It has GOT to make you feel better.
My fave cowboy of the night was a 19-year-old named Tuf Cooper. So, yes, I am officially changing my Secret Fantasy Boyfriend to Tuf Cooper. How can you not fall in love with someone named Tuf Cooper? Even if he is a tad young for me. Who cares! He can rope a calf in 8 seconds! Can Nate Silver rope a calf in 8 seconds? No f-ing way. Sorry, Nate.

Tuf, I wish I knew how to quit you.

Courtney and Tonya,
Thanks for stopping by! Courtney, it was such an honor to meet you! We will definitely be at the rodeo again next year–I can’t wait. (And maybe next year I’ll get to meet Tuf. A girl can dream…)

Margo,
I am on the Miss Rodeo Austin committee and am so glad y’all had a good experience. Each year our competition gets better and better. We had our best group of girls this year. With young women like Courtney and Devin it makes our job so easy. We have learned that there is more to a rodeo queen than make up and Texas “big hair”. These young ladies have to be personable, ride a horse and look pretty.
Come join us next year. We would love to have y’all and let you have a behind-the-scenes look.
Have a wonderful day. Anne

Let me introduce myself, I’m Rose and im 12 years old. A friend of mine turned me on to your Missing Persons series and I fell in love!!! I read all of them as quickly as I could get my hands on them. Just last night I read both the second and third books in the wee hours of the morning. After I woke up I immeidatly started reading the fouth book. I have a question though. Why did you stop writing them at four books? I have always been an advanced reader, and finding books with a story line I like that aren’t way too easy for me is hard. Your books are perfect for a relaxed read. I can’t stop turning the pages, and they are short, but sweet, the perfect book to read one summer afternoon while lying by the pool, or tanning at the beach. I’d really really like it if you started writing them again, I know you stopped a while ago, but why not pick up again? I know its not easy writing books, and its even harder to write such amazing ones like yours, but please please will you consider writing again.
Also It would be really cool to get to talk to you, do you think maybe sometime if you get the chance you could email me? Its relisabeth12@gmail.com
God Bless,
Your biggest fan,
Rose
